If there is one phase that I'm anxious to end, it is mouthing. These days it seems everything goes in Jillian's mouth from my shoes to tufts of dog hair to remote controls to plugs. I understand this is how she learns about the world, but I'm going a bit batty over it. Between being a mom and work, I don't have a lot of spare time. So you can see why I hate using that spare time to clean my floors every single day. And while I love my daughter, it would be nice to engage in an activity besides following her around and removing all the objects she encounters that would be inappropriate to put in her mouth. Yesterday I removed 5 pieces of hard dog food from her mouth when she beat me to the bowl. She is both quick and sneaky.
So moms of older children, please tell me when this will end. Because I'm starting to have concerns that my future 5 year old will be chewing on Jeramy's dirty socks.

I'm laughing and cringing as I learn what I'm in store for! EEK! I find myself looking at the living room and invisioning where the baby pasture will be:)
Maybe you could pick up the dog food? My dogs used to get to 'graze' all day at their food, but I started picking up the bowl of breakfast food after a reasonable time (like 20 minutes) and wouldn't put it down again until dinner. Poor doggies got some tough love.
As for the other stuff...think of how strong her immune system will be!
I have a bad feeling that the 'everything goes in the mouth stage' lasts until age 2!
We usually put the dog food outside during the daytime, but sometimes I forget...
Julian is also deep in the mouthing phase - has been since he started crawling and exploring. Our shoes are his favorite - gross! Hopefully it'll go away once they're walking!
It's tough to say when she'll stop. Bean did that for a while while he was teething, but it was relatively short lived. But at the park a month ago, one of the little preschool girls who was 22 months old kept putting stuff in her mouth. I was surprised, actually, that she was still doing it at that age!
Hopefully Jillian will be more like Bean.
Sorry, we're at 16 months and I still have to dig coins, bottle caps and random bits of food from the floor from his mouth. There is no end in sight.
We're just getting started with it... thank god she's not mobile yet- that & the dogs house their food in 10 minutes flat! Now the fur & various other bits that end up on the floor I will need to come up with a game plan for...
I think it ends around 7, maybe 8. ;o)
LOL, My son was not a mouther, but my BFF daughter (same age) was and she had poison control on her speed dial, hell I think she just had a couple weekly standing appointments with them. Her daughter somehow found everything, from laundry soap, motor oil, makeup, shampoo, you name it, she ate it.
I have no idea when it ends, except to say that presumably they learn to tell food from (my morning example), the clothes pegs and vacuum head.
