How the Birth Control Discussions have Changed

While our difficulties were minute when compared to that of some others, the year of trying to have a baby definitely changed my views on some things. One of those is birth control. I took the pill religiously for a decade. If I slipped up and missed a pill, I immediately broke out those doctor recommended secondary forms of protection. I remember my first few months on the pill and that feeling of fear as I waited for my period. I mean what if it didn't arrive...*gasp*! Certainly having a baby during that time of my life would not have been the best idea. Who knew that 10 years later such precautions relatively unnecessary. I could have probably saved myself quite a bit of money; $30 x 14 cycles per year x 10 years = $4,200.

So after Spot is born, there will be no forms of birth control for me. We definitely want a second child, so the worst case scenario here is that we'd have an "accident". But hey, at this point an accident sounds like a pretty good deal to me although my RE would probably be disappointed to lose the repeat business.

At the same time, I hear about other couples...normal couples that is...who are having their 2nd child and then getting their tubes tied immediately. A year ago I would have thought this to be completely normal, but now I'm suddenly horrified by such a thought. Who are these souls with so much security that they have no fears of the repercussions of this? It is so very permanent. I mean what about SIDS? Or random car accidents? Or something that may not happen for another 2, 3, or even 10 more years? I'm not saying that they are making a bad decision. For them maybe it is a very good decision. But it sure scares the crap out of me.

P.S. Just 5 days left to enter your opinion as to Spot's gender.

Visiting you from Taking the Statistical Bullet. Katie nominated you for an award so I was checking out your blog!

ANYWAY, I use natural family planning. Some birth control (please note I use the word "some" becuase I know people get angry when I say this...) are abortifacients. They basically cause a fertilized egg to not implant.

Other BC is intended for you to not even ovulate and those are not abortifacients.

And I know what you mean about getting tubes tied. I don't know if I could ever make that decision because it is permanently or very costly to reverse!

Ha, so very true. For me I tried bcp for a year, but hated how they made me feel. So Cole and I just stuck with condoms for many years. Either they worked really well or it really just didn't matter.

I voted girl!

PS- I also nominated you!

We are crying over our wasted BC too... the cost of it could have financed our treatment! Oh well, hindsight being 20/20 and all. Like you said, it will certainly save us the cost of any BC in the future. :)

But the reason I came is to say HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

I totally understand ya. A decade of bc pills, followed by more than 2 years of trying, shaking my head at all those wasted prescription copays. Now that we're (finally) pregnant, hubby and I look at each other every so often and say "what kind of birth control do you want to use after the baby's born?" Then we laugh and laugh and laugh. As you point out, the "worst case" scenario of having 2 kids really close together still seems like not-so-bad scenario to me.

Hey there, I'm with you 100%. I don't think I will ever use any form of birth control, ever again. I figure, it's probably never going to happen "on it's own," and if it does, I guess it was really meant to be.

I voted boy. Dunno why, but that's my guess.

I'm totally with you on the no birth control! We are completely good with having an "accident"!

I know what you mean. When I start thinking about the money I would have saved on condoms and bcp, I could have bought myslef a lot of nice new stuff.

I voted girl. Then Spot can have the name Banana, remember?
